Agriculture


Land Resources: 

The agricultural surface area rises to 927,400 ha or 39% of the total surface area of the region. This ratio varies from one province to another; it is 48% in Al Hoceima, 76% in Taounte, 23% in Taza and Guercif where routes and alfa watertable covers a significant portion of the area. It is cultivated on ‘’bour’’ up to 94% and 6% in irrigated. 

Water Resources: 

The region offers great potential in surface water materialized by large rivers (wadi Ouargha, Wadi Inaouen, Moulouya wadi Ghiss and Neckor); however due to the dominance of impermeable geological formations underground water reserves remain relatively modest. 

Legal Status of Agricultural Estates: 

The legal status of land shows a predominance of Melk land (hold estates (83%). The share of land that belongs to the state and habous is low (1% and 5% respectively); however, the collective lands occupy 11% of the total surface area.

Size of farms: 

The region has 197,614 farms where 55% is concentrated in the province of Taounate, 29% in Taza and Guercif and 16% in Al-Hoceima. 

The farms are dominated by small farm. Indeed, the properties of less than 5 ha represent 78.5% of the total holdings in the region (against 56.5% at the national level). 

Crop production: 

The cultivated land shows: 

  • The predominance of cereals with a surface area of 425,000 ha, or 61% of courses mentioned above and 51% of the used agriculture surface UAS.  This occupancy rate is 43% in Taza and Guercif, 45% in Taounate and 53% in Al Hoceima; 
  • The fruit plantation is ranked second with 281,000 ha (30% of UAS) with a predominance of olive trees; 
  • The pulses with an area of 110,000 ha (12% of UAS) 
  • Forage crops occupy an area of 19,000 ha (2% of UAS); 
  • Vegetable crops with 10,000 ha (1% of UAS). 
 


What the regional level provides: 

For crop production, potential investment, estimated at 3.5 billion DH or 68% of the total investment estimated at 5.2 billion DH, will cover 65 projects for the production and aggregation of durum wheat / soft as well as the seed production of barley and durum wheat / soft. The agricultural plan also envisages the expansion and the renewal of citrus groves and aggregation of their production. It is also planned to expand and intensify of olive trees along with the production and processing of olives. The rest of the envelope will, finally, be dedicated to the expansion, rehabilitation and valorization of almonds, figs, and the intensification of caper. 

Animal production: 

The total number of livestock in the region of Taza - Al Hoceima-Taounate amounts to 2 190,000 heads. 

The species distribution shows the dominance of sheep with 1 533,000 head followed by goats with 416,000 heads and in third place comes cattle with 241,000 heads, which represent respectively 70%, 19% and 11% of the total.

 

 

What the regional plan envisages: 

Livestock production, the plan envisages the launch of 10 projects that will benefit from an envelope of 488MDH or 9% of the total investment. These projects are intended mainly for the intensification and aggregation of milk production and enhancement of goats’ milk as a regional product. It will also improve the productivity of sheep, to create workshops for bulls fattening and intensify the production of goat meat. Finally, the plan would create a regional apiarian center and develop social aggregation in the field of beekeeping by supporting cooperatives. 

Note: the 1.2 billion DH of remaining investment, or 23% of the total, are dedicated to projects supporting transversal projects, also called transverse actions, which will cover the particular area of improvement and rehabilitation of small and medium hydraulic (SMH) and the creation of olive platforms.
